Summer time fine

It has DEFINITELY been a while! Here's what I've done so far this summer, and what I plan on doing!

I've been doing more twist/braid outs so far (but also a lot of maintenance, so it balances itself out!) HOWEVER, I do plan on doing more protective styling!

Love this look!

I love this style! Protects, while
looking elegant!

I'm not sure if I'd do this on MY hair...
but maybe on someone else's!

SO4 2-

For those of you who aren't familiar with the title, it's the chemical formula for sulfate! So yes.... You've clearly figured out that this post is about sulfates!
(I know what you're thinking. It does look really pretty, but it's not so nice to your hair!)

..but what does Sulfate have to do with my hair??

Most shampoos contain sulfate (because of its wonderful cleansing ability). Some  conditioners do as well, but most conditioners contain sulfates that are not harsh. A harsh sulfate has an amazing ability to strip your hair of its moisture. Having dry or brittle hair will cause much breakage and there goes all your attempts at retaining length... down the drain (pun intended). Here are some harsh sulfates that you should check your shampoo ingredients for: Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, TEA Laureth Sulfate, TEA Lauryl Sulfate. Some nicer sulfates that you may run into (you might even see on the back of your shampoo bottle because you're probably gonna check.....NOW): Polyoxethylene Fatty Alcohols, PEG 80, Sorbitan Laurate, Decyl Polyglucose, Cocamidoprpyl Betaine, Sodium Myreth Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate

If you have been using a shampoo with a harsh sulfate, you may want to switch it up as soon as possible. If you have been experiencing a lot of breakage, you hair is asking for some TLC! Maybe you need to add regular protein treatments to your regimen (every other week, every couple of weeks), maybe you need to up the moisture, perhaps you need to do some more protective styling, it's probably time to limit heat, or maybe you it's time for a trim. Whatever it is, you will only figure it out but experimenting (FYI, none of this suggestions will actually hurt you, so feel free to try all of them!

What I'm doing now: Cowashing!
I haven't shampoo'd since about... Late March? I've been cowashing once a week with TRESemme Naturals, a sulfate free conditioner.

How do I feel about it?
LOVE. I like the fact that my hair doesn't feel even the slightest bit of stripped when I'm done washing. It also has made my hair extra soft and EXTRA curly. I hadn't realized until I mini twisted recently. The look wasn't expected, but I don't totally mind.

Hope this helps! :)

Twist Outs!!

Twist outs are definitely one of my go-to hairstyle. Easy to twist, easy to style... Need I say more?! I usually wear my twists for 3-5 days, taking it out to style. While my twists are in, I still moisturize, however. I'll post some helpful videos for you guys!

In this video, the twists are flat twists, which I find produces even more definition, but it also takes more time so more often than not, I'll do loose twists on WET hair.

My regimen! (REPOST)

So I actually accidentally deleted this post a couple monthsago. The good thing is however, I have changed around a couple of my steps, sothis is an updated version! Here’s what I do on wash day:
1.      Detangle (occasionally I would deep conditionthe night before)
2.      Shampoo (every other wash is a cowash)
3.      Condition
4.      Deep condition
5.      Wash
6.      Style and dry

On the regular, here is what I do:
·        Each night: mist with a water/oil mix
·        Each morning: shower without a  shower cap to let my hair get some moisturenaturally
·        Every other wash: protein treatment

A little more detail….
(By the way, the products are used are just what I find workwell for MY hair. It may not do the same wonders for you! Feel free to use whatyou’d like!)

Step 1: Detangle               Time:About 10-15 minutes
First things first! No matter what style my hair was in theday/night before I decided to wash, I always FINGER detangle. I wet my hair, orsometimes I may add some conditioner and water. I go through my entire head ofhair, looking for tangles and knots (YES! Everyone gets knots!). I estimated thetime to be between 10 and 15 minutes, but if you do it faster, that is okay.

Step 2: Shampoo              Time:About 10-15 minutes
To do this step, I section my hair into four bug parts. Iwash each part separately, and do a big twist when I have applied the shampoo. When I wash, I mostly focus on washing my roots because the suds will traveldown your hair shaft on its own.  When Ihave applied shampoo to all for sections, I wash my hair section by section, and retwist for the application of my conditioner. What I use: Giovanni Smooth as Silk shampoo (Walmart $7)

Step 3: Conditioner         Time:About 10-15 minutes
So after I add shampoo, I add conditioner in the samemanner. Apply it o the 4 separate sections, retwisting after each application, wash out in sections, and retwist for deep conditioning.  What I use:Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner (Walmart $7)

Step 4: Deep Conditioner             Time:30 minutes- 1 hour (varies a whole lot)
This step is the biggest change in my regimen. Last year, Ideep conditioned the night before/ about 30 minutes before I washed every time. Not I do after I shampoo because after adding shampoo your hair may be a littlestripped and deep conditioning can replenish it smack in the middle of yourwhole wash process. Whenever you chose to do it is okay, however. Applying mydeep conditioner is the almost same as the application of shampoo andconditioner. Add it in the four sections, but instead of washing my hair, Ileave the conditioner on and put a shower cap on for about an hour. During thistime, I find it’s useful to do my chores or something so I’m never wastingtime! What I use: Bear Fruit HairShea and Coconut Leave in Conditioner, which can be found online (about $13) ORmy homemade mix which contains EVOO, honey, and sometimes avocado (heated). Igo into even more detail about the process, though here.

Step 5: Wash!    Time:About 5 minutes
This is the final step of the wash process. At this point, Ilet my twists down and wash my hair while stretching it. (You could also washby sections… doesn’t matter how you do it… as long as you get all the sudsout!)

Step 6: Style and Dry      Time:Anywhere between 1 and 3 hours lol
Now depending on what you chose to do with your hair, it cantake a really long time, so make sure you’ve planned accordingly. If I’mstyling my hair for an occasion, I will do something nice to it, However, if I’mjust twisting to let it dry and protect my ends, I’ll usually do small tomedium twists all around my head because I love the definition that resultswhen  take it down. What I use (staples): a Moisturizing mix: water (mostly), coconut oil, jojoba oil, Bearfruithair moisturizer, olive oil; Shea butter, sometimes I'll use my Aussie spray on gel (less flaking!), bobby pins (of course!), banana clip, small scarf (to use as headband), satin bonnet

No heat challenge: Idon’t use heat that much on my hair, but I’m trying not to use any heat AT ALLthis year. Sometimes after twisting I’d sit under an overhead dryer for about20-30 minutes, but not this year! I just let my hair air dry, usually overnight. I also used to deep condition by sitting under the dryer for about 30minutes, but I don’t do that anymore either. Your body’s natural heat with ashower cap does the same job.

Everyday regimen:
Each night I spray my mist my hair with water and coat withcoconut oil. In the morning, when I’m showering, I usually do it without ashower cap now because my hair likes the natural moisture. Every other wash, Ido a protein treatment, which is instead of using conditioner in my for my deepconditioner, I use my vegetable glycerin protein (iherb.com).  I also hunt for split ends once a month.

Tips:
·        Be sure you’re constantly running your fingersthrough your hair to avoid any knots forming.
·        Try to avoid as much heat as possible
·        Listen to your hair! Pick the products thatproduce results!
·        Be patient, and stick to your regimen! Your hair will love you for it!

The (Not-So-Mini) Twist Journey

I am going on week 3 since I last washed my hair. Now this is a little unconventional for me... I usually wash/cowash my hair every other week (if not every week even!)... I am a LITTLE shocked at myself, but I'm also proud of myself! Truthfully, this isn't something I planned. I know for a act I'm only going on week 3 because I didn't have time this past week to wash it, but unlike my typical routine, I haven't left my hair in its "I'm-about-to-be-washed-so-I'm-not-gonna-be-styled-till-then" look. Lol. I actually did a couple overnight styles, I did a deep condition, and I was very proud of the results! Since I changed my hair so much, I'll put only one or two of each hairstyle.

What I've learned over the past 3 weeks: I used to totally hate moisturizing with just water, but after the curl results I've been getting, I don't even mind the shrinkage! Also, stretching my hair is easier and not as time consuming and I used to assume! Enjoy experimenting :)

Winter Hair Protection

So I haven't quite been setting the best example for hair care so far this year. I have been slacking on my hat gear, but I am working on my scarf collection. I've also been doing really well with keeping my hair well moisturized! I keep my hair protected 3 out of 4 times, but I also think its important to give you air some time to breath and some time to be appreciated! I found a GREAT website with some very important suggestions. You can find it here. I'll post some pictures with my latest hairstyle! Happy Experimenting!!

Homemade Shea butter cream

So yesterday I tried my first homemade hair product! It came out pretty awesome actually. My measurements were not exactly accurate but my Shea butter did come out creamy (as the video said it would). I am very satisfied with the product! I added the same ingredients as the video (see last post) minus the castor oil (I added a little more coconut oil). I wish I snapped a picture of the unrefined Shea butter, but unfortunately I totally forgot. I do have a couple pics of the cream though. Pics below!

Happy experimenting!

My Next Project: Homemade Shea Butter!

My mom brought me a container of all natural Shea butter so I'm thinking I'm gonna make my own Shea butter cream. I've been looking for a good recipe/video, and I finally found the one I think I'm gonna attempt... Maybe I'll do it tonight! It's really simple; mostly just regular kitchen/hair ingredients. I'll let you guy know how it goes!

Here's the video!

Too old mini twists?

There's no such thing!! There's always something you can do with your "old" mini twists/twist out/braid out, etc. I wanted to wash my hair last week, but I totally didn't have any time so I pinned it up with a banana clip. Took me a grand total of about 5 mins to turn floppy and lifeless into fabulous! :) There are many different styles that can be done with a twist out (I'll post some videos) But I did a simple one. Pics below!
